Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Start by cleaning the metal railing thoroughly. Use a degreaser—I like Krud Kutter— or mild soap to remove dirt, grease, and grime. Rinse with water and let it dry completely. If the railing is rusty, use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove rust flakes. Vacuum dust and then wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any degreaser residue.
Step 2: Protect Surrounding Areas
Use painter’s tape to cover any areas you don’t want to paint, such as walls or floors adjacent to the railing. Lay down drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect the ground from paint drips or overspray.
Step 3: Sand the Surface
Once the railing is clean and dry, sand it lightly with medium-grit sandpaper. I used 80 grit for the really rough spots and 120 for other less rusty areas, and to smooth out flaked areas. This will help create a rough surface for the primer to adhere to. Wipe away any dust with a tack cloth or clean rag.
Step 4: Apply Primer
Apply a coat of metal primer to the railing. I used Rustoleum primer for rusty metal and loved the result—I’ve linked the products in the description below. Ensure you cover all surfaces evenly. Allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Priming is crucial to prevent rust and help the paint adhere better.
Step 5: Paint the Railing
Once the primer is dry, it’s time to paint! Choose a metal paint in your preferred finish (gloss, semi-gloss, or matte). If using spray paint, hold the can 8-12 inches away from the surface and apply in smooth, even strokes. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat if needed. I sprayed 2 even coats.
Step 6: Final Touches
Inspect the railing for any missed spots or uneven areas and touch up as necessary. After the paint has fully dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape. Let the paint cure fully before using the railing to ensure maximum durability.
