Step 1: Clean and Prep
First things first, we need to ensure our dresser is squeaky clean. I used Krud Kutter, but Simple Green or TSP are excellent options too. The key here is to remove all the grime and rinse thoroughly with warm water to get rid of any residue.
Step 2: Smooth and Repair
Next, it's time to make the surface as smooth as possible. If you spot any imperfections, use wood filler for minor repairs. For more significant issues, Kwikwood or Bondo are great alternatives. Afterward, do a quick scuff sand with 220 grit and wipe it clean with a tack cloth to remove any dust.
Sand the drawer sides with 220 grit sandpaper to ensure a nice, even surface. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth to ensure a clean surface for primer application.
Step 3: Prime
Apply two coats of primer. This step is crucial, especially if you're working with a previously finished piece. Primer helps the paint adhere better and ensures a longer-lasting finish. Allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4: Paint
Choose a chalk or latex paint in your desired color, and apply it evenly with a paintbrush or foam roller, or go the route I did and use a paint sprayer. The color for this project is Benjamin Moore’s October Mist (their 2022 Paint Color of the Year) Advance paint with a satin finish. French Provincial pieces often look lovely in muted tones such as soft pastels. Depending on the color and type of paint, you may need two to three coats for full coverage. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. See the YouTube video for more info about this paint option.
Step 5: Reattach Hardware
Reattach the hardware. I painted the the hardware a soft gold. You can find a tutorial for painting metal here. Secure everything in place, and your dresser is ready to shine!
This elegant piece will undoubtedly become a focal point in your space, adding both function and style.
