Transform Your Space with an Extreme Furniture Makeover: Vintage Bookshelf

Are you ready to dive into a bold and colorful furniture makeover? This project is definitely not for those seeking neutrals! I stumbled upon a charming vintage bookshelf at Goodwill for just $10, and after letting it sit primed for over a year, I finally completed its transformation. Using a sample pot of paint mixed with BB Frosch Paint Transformer, I created a chalk paint that’s both cost-effective and perfect for furniture projects. The final result? A BOLD masterpiece that gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from this color and pattern lover!

Supplies

Step 1: Thorough Cleaning

To kick off the makeover, I gave the bookshelf a thorough cleaning inside and out using a degreaser. I opted for Krud Kutter, but Simple Green or TSP are also excellent choices. The key is to remove all the grime and then rinse off any leftover residue with water.

Step 2: Repairs and Preparation

After cleaning, I made some minor repairs using wood filler. Depending on the severity of the damage, you might also consider Kwikwood or Bondo. A quick scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper and a wipe down with a tack cloth prepared the surface for painting.

Step 3: Priming and Painting

I applied two coats of primer to the bookshelf and followed up with approximately 3.5 coats of Benjamin Moore paint mixed with BB Frosch Paint Transformer. Yellow can be tricky, often requiring multiple coats for full coverage. The BB Frosch necessitated a topcoat, so I finished with two layers using a paintbrush, allowing each layer to dry overnight.

Step 4: Adding Wallpaper

The real magic happened when I adorned the back and sides of the bookshelf with beautiful peel-and-stick wallpaper. Since it's a low-traffic piece, I decided not to seal the wallpaper, preserving its delightful matte finish.

The Bold Result

What do you think? I love the vibrant pop of color and the adaptability of this bookshelf. The colors perfectly complement my eclectic and colorful aesthetic..

This bold furniture makeover is just one example of how you can breathe new life into vintage pieces.
